EVOL creates hyper-realistic paintings on cardboard of architectural structures emblematic of East Berlin using only hand-cut stencils and spray paint. Having first gained notoriety for his series “Plattenbauten,” for which he sprays defunct electrical cabinets on the streets of Berlin to look like typical low-income Post-Soviet apartment blocs, EVOL’s cardboard compositions have been described as “Hopper-esque”. These paintings, despite their empty streets and abandoned balconies, celebrate the ordinary people living behind the urban landscape’s drab facades, whose personal stories and shared histories inject meaning into otherwise lifeless slabs of concrete and stone.
