Turner Contemporary, the brand new public art gallery on the beach at Margate, Kent, has been designed by David Chipperfield. It is the award-winning British architect's first major new building in this country since 1997. The £17.5m gallery rises from the site of the boarding house where the artist JMW Turner studied the play of light on the sea here that inspired many of his greatest paintings.
Turner Contemporary opens to the public on 16 April. Here, the photographer Richard Bryant gives us a preview of the beautifully lit spaces that will soon be filled with art and visitors from Kent, Britain and beyond
There's something very solemn in the architecture of David Chipperfield. Behind it's shiny happy yellows and colourful glass are the concrete structures and the melancholy, serious modernism. It's all very grown up.
